In recognition that under State and Federal emergency declarations, services from State motor vehicle licensing agencies and health care providers are closed or limited, the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration today extended the validity of certain Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) and Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLP) through June 30, 2020. Highlights of the FMCSA’s action are below; its published notice can be viewed here.

  • CDLs and CLPs due to expire on or after March 1, 2020 may be deemed valid through June 30, 2020.
  • Medical certifications due to expire on or after March 1, 2020 may be deemed valid through June 30, 2020 provided that the driver’s expiring medical certification was issued for a period of 90 days or longer. Drivers must carry a paper copy of the expired medical certificate. Drivers who cannot produce evidence of a valid certification that expired on or after March 1, 2020 will not be permitted the extension.
  • The extensions do not apply to CDLs and CLPs that expired before March 1, 2020.
  • The extensions do not apply if the driver’s CDL or CPL is suspended or revoked due to traffic offenses.
  • The extensions do not apply to drivers who, since issuance of their current medical certification, have been diagnosed with a disqualifying condition or have developed a condition that requires an exemption or Skill Performance Evaluation from FMCSA.
  • The extensions do not apply to medical certifications originally issued for less than 90 days.
  • Motor Carriers (Employers) will be required to notify FMCSA of any accidents involving a driver operating with a CDL or CLP that was extended under the FMCSA action.
